The duo sonata became a hallmark of 19th-century chamber music, and Brahms and Grieg wrote multiple works in the genre (duo sonatas for clarinet, for example, or violin or viola). Today's program centers on works for cello and piano and includes the two examples from Brahms - written some 20 years apart from each other - and Norwegian Edvard Grieg's lone sonata for these instruments.

Brahms | Sonata No 1 for Cello and Piano, Op. 38
Grieg | Sonata in A Minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 36
Brahms | Sonata No 2 for Cello and Piano, Op. 99
