The sonata is one of the most important forms of the Classical and Romantic eras, but composers often seek to transcend its conventions by injecting moments of imagination. Musical works by Britten, Couperin, and Ravel make the case for fantasy.

Britten | Phantasy-Quartet, for oboe and string trio
Couperin | Sonata “La Sultane”, for two violins, gamba, and continuo
Ravel | Duo for violin and cello
