Percussion

Praised for a combination of power and feline-like grace, Brian Smith delivers “committed and energetic” performances (Sequenza 21) through historical, contemporary, West African, and experimental genres, including original works for musical robotics and percussion. Also an active arranger, Brian co-directs The Stravinsky Project, creative adaptations of Igor Stravinsky’s ballets for piano and percussion. As an orchestral musician, Brian has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, appearing in world-class concert halls including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Berlin Philharmonie. He has served as principal percussionist and timpanist with the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, Opera on the James, and the Endless Mountain Festival Orchestra. He plays historical and modern percussion with the Staunton Music Festival and is a founding member of the Shanghai-based trio 漠 (mò) Percussion.
