Liza Malamut

Period Trombones

Liza Malamut specializes in historical trombones and is Artistic Director of The Newberry Consort in Chicago. She has performed with premier period ensembles at venues all over the world, and her playing can be heard on the Musica Omnia, Naxos, and Hyperion labels, among others. She is also a founding member of Incantare, an ensemble of violins, sackbuts, and organ. A passionate teacher and researcher, she teaches sackbut at Indiana University, and she is a co-editor and contributor for the book Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy: New Perspectives, winner of the 2023 Ruth A. Solie Award. Liza holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance from Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music degree from Boston University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Historical Performance from Boston University. When not engaged in musical activities, Liza can usually be found on a hiking trail, reading a good book, or tending her tiny deck garden in Chicago.
