In his short lifetime, Franz Schubert (1797-1828) composed literally hundreds of the most compelling and influential German art songs (called lieder) in history. And beyond many individual songs, he crafted several stunning song cycles: sets of interrelated poems and music that trace spiritual journeys in sound. Die schöne Müllerin, composed in 1823, perfectly captures the essence of the genre, combining romantic poetry with responsive music for voice and piano. The cycle is performed by Derek Chester (tenor) and Carsten Schmidt (fortepiano).
